Safe Homes
What is Waterford Country School’s Safe Home Program?Waterford Country School’s Safe Home Program provides emergency short-term placement for children aged 3 to 12 who have been removed from their homes, many for the first time...because of abuse, neglect, or hardship. A unique feature of the Safe Home Program is its ability to keep sibling groups together. Where Are the Safe Homes Located? The Safe Home Program consists of three child-friendly houses. The Ken Grube and Sam Olynciw Safe Homes are two modern, comfortable homes set amid the quiet, natural landscape of rural Southeastern Connecticut on the Waterford Country School campus. Each of these two homes provide accommodations for ten children. The third house is located in North Windham, Connecticut amid five acres of natural landscape in Northeastern Connecticut. This house provides accommodations for eight children. All of our homes provide space for dining, recreation, visiting, supervision, and administration. How are Safe Home Services Accessed? The Safe Home Program is accessed through the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF).
What Services Does the Safe Home Program Provide? In addition to providing temporary housing that is friendly, safe, and cheerful, the Safe Home Program provides a compassionate circle of care for displaced children, with an emphasis on emotional stabilization and crisis intervention. Its dedicated team of Master’s level clinicians, nurses, consulting psychiatrist, childcare workers, and recreation coordinator are focused on the immediate physical, emotional, and psychological needs of each child, and work in concert with in-house and community-based child health wellness associations to meet each child’s specialized needs. Additional services include:
How Can the Community Help? The Safe Home Program greatly appreciates the generosity of the community in helping to provide children with a safe and nurturing respite from the pain and hardship of their family life. The most beneficial way the community can help is to make a monetary donation to Waterford Country School, or by providing items such as gift certificates, movie or museum passes, new clothes, art supplies, and toys.
