What is Waterford Country School’s Special Education Program?

Special Education at Waterford Country School is a comprehensive, state approved educational program consisting of academic, pre-vocational, behavior management, life skills, and support programs for residents and day students typically aged 8 to 18.
What Does the Special Education Program Consist of?
The Special Education Program at Waterford Country School is dedicated to the multi-faceted educational and developmental needs of its students. The school features a low student-to-teacher ratio, allowing highly personalized instruction. In addition to providing appropriate classroom instruction, the program seeks to provide personal achievement and improvement initiatives to enable students to better meet the challenges they face in their school, family, and community.
What Other Services Are Provided?

- Experiential Education
An innovative component of student life is working with farm animals and wildlife, as part of the Waterford Country School Experiential Education Program. Students participate in the daily responsibilities of caring for the animals, buildings, and grounds. Classroom study is also a component of Experiential Education.
- Health and Physical Education
A full range of topics and activities, such as good health, nutrition, sex education, interpersonal relationships, and physical education are offered.
- Desktop Publishing and Multimedia
Students take part in current computer technology, including understanding computers, keyboarding skills, internet applications, online capabilities, and a range of multimedia resources.
- Counseling and Conflict Resolution
Conflict resolution is an important part of Waterford Country School’s special education curriculum, both individually and as a group. Conflict resolution is intended to assist students in handling anger and interpersonal relationships in more constructive ways, both on campus and in family life.
- On-Grounds Cooperative Work Program
Students age 14 and older may participate in Employment Skills Development (ESD), where they learn to prepare for entry into the workforce. The curriculum consists of introducing students to career plans, developing employment skills, completing job applications, writing an effective resume, the interview process, and many other key preparatory skills. Students may also take part in work experiences off campus.
- Public School Transition Program
Students in Waterford Country School’s Special Education Program may be considered to attend the local public school system through the planning and placement team.
What are the Facilities of the Special Education Program?

Special Education is primarily based at the Levine Education Center, a modern educational facility on the Waterford Country School Campus. Built in 1999, the Center consists of two floors, eleven classrooms, computer lab, conference space and administrative offices.
Who are the Special Education Staff?
The Special Education Program staff includes certified teachers, staff instructors, teachers’ aides, a school psychologist, a school social worker, a speech therapist, and administrators.
